Our view is that it’s good to experience as many different formats as you can, however, be aware that some will significantly more valuable to you than others, and different people will learn more from different formats.

In this post, we rate the different approaches based upon our own experience of them. Remember, yours may be different, and, whatever the format, your own results will depend upon your character, preferences, attitude towards the training as well as the quality of the trainer and another other participants. So, you still need to do your own due diligence before signing up for any training course.

Our rating goes from 5 stars (excellent) to 1 star (okay).

Types of NLP Training Format

  • Face to face training with 5-25 people
  • Face to face training with 25-50+ people
  • 1:1 face to face training
  • 1:1 live Skype or Zoom (or equivalent) training
  • Live online training with breakout rooms and a forum
  • Recorded on-line training with a forum
  • YouTube, DVDs and MP3s
  • Books

Face to face training with 5-25 People

This is traditional face to face training. The advantages are that you’ve people to practice with, and small group training works well for many people. The disadvantage is that you may leave the training in the training room when you leave as there is no long-term or follow-up element.

Our rating *** Very useful

Face to face training with 25-50+ people

This is also traditional face to face to face training, normally with more famous and or popular trainers. The advantage is that you may get a more experienced trainer and a wider selection of people to practice with. The disadvantage is that you may feel a bit ‘processed’ and there is no guarantee that the trainers actually are any better than those who run smaller groups. As with the smaller group training, there is no long-term follow-up element.

Our rating *** Very useful. (The exception are NLP co-creator, Richard Bandler’s programmes, which get a ***** Excellent rating if you are lucky enough to attend one.)

1:1 face to face training

This type of NLP training is likely to be expensive and geographically restricted. However, subject to choosing the right trainer, it allows you to explore personal and confidential issues and opportunities. The advantage is that you can build the training around what you want to achieve. Although there are no fellow participants to practice with, you will be able to try out your new skills in the real world between sessions.

Our rating **** Good

1:1 live Skype or Zoom (or equivalent) training

Provided you have the opportunity to test out the trainer and the format, this is can be a really great option – taking the best from face to face training, but without the geographic and cost restrictions. You and the trainer can build the programme to suit your exact requirements, and the trainer will be able to help you individually to develop your own approaches and solutions.

While you don’t have a group to practice with, you’ll be a able to practice the approaches you learn directly in the environment where you work and live.

Our rating ***** Excellent

Live online training with breakout rooms and a forum

Again, providing you have the opportunity to test out the trainer and the actual format, this can be an exceptionally valuable way to learn NLP. It’s normally significantly less expensive than the other group training, and you can choose the best trainers worldwide.

Rating ***** Excellent

Recorded online training

This can be also be a great format, the advantage being that it can be even less expensive than the online live training, and you get a chance to experience the training approach of the top NLP trainers. Of course, you do miss out on the interaction element, but we feel this is still a very worthwhile way of learning. You can access Richard Bandler’s back catalogue below.

Our rating ***** Excellent

YouTube, DVDs and MP3s

These can be a great source of information to start your NLP journey, or to help you reach the next level. The disadvantage is that the content can be varied, and in some cases simply nonsense. You have to listen and watch with care.

Our ratings range from **** Great to * OK, and sometimes even no stars.

Books

NLP books can be a great source of infomation, either when you are just thinking about NLP training, or to add depth and background to what you are learning / have learned. As with the recordings above, quality is extremely varied. Our view is that books are great to supplement other learning, but are not effective as a sole learning source.

Our ratings range from **** Great to * OK

NLP Training Format Conclusion

All the above formats have advantages and disadvantages, and your choice will be influenced by who you are, want you want, your budget, and your attitude as well as the quality of the trainer you choose, and the quality of other attendees on the programme.

Taking these points into account, the top three formats we recommend most are:

  • 1:1 online live training
  • Group online live training with break-out rooms and a forum
  • Recorded online training
