Direction and Outcomes — Your Northstar. V24

NLP Direction and Outcomes: Key Takeaway

Most people either dream about the future or become trapped in endless activity. Neither produces consistent progress. Direction gives us somewhere worth going, while the outcomes process helps us evaluate and act on the key steps to move towards it.

Direction (Northstar): The Non-Negotiable

Every meaningful journey starts with a direction or North Star. We need a number of these throughout our lives. These are five core examples, but choose your own:

  • Financial freedom
  • Meaningful work
  • Meaningful relationships
  • Giving back
  • Great health

While we may give them different priorities at different times, these remain appropriate for most of our lives. They are closely tied to our core values.

In addition, they need to be clear enough to make today’s decisions easier and keep you motivated about the future. Without direction, effort scatters. With direction, even difficult work begins to feel purposeful.

The 5-Stage NLP Outcome Process

These help you clarify your steps to move towards your direction/NorthStar

Stage 1: Positively Stated

Focus on something you actually want—not what you are trying to avoid or escape.

Stage 2: Sensory-Specific Evidence

What specifically will you see, hear, and feel when it is well achieved? Describe the endpoint using sensory language so it connects to the real world, not just an idea in your head. Do not be concerned if you don’t know how to achieve it at this stage.

Stage 3: Self-Initiated and Maintained

Know clearly what is:

  • Under your direct control
  • Under your influence
  • Not under your control

So you can invest your time, energy, and focus strictly where it will move you forward.

Stage 4: Identify a First Small Step (Minimum Viable Action)

Identify the smallest immediate action and be 100% committed to taking it.

Stage 5: Ecology

Do you actually want it? If you had the option, would you take it right now? In many cases, people don’t want what they think they want. It is far better to know in advance than to waste time and energy. Is it genuinely good for you and those closest to you? If not, simply set a different outcome that moves you towards your North Star.

NLP Direction and Outcomes: FAQs

Q: Why should an outcome be stated positively?

A: Because it directs attention and focus towards what you actually want, rather than reinforcing what you are trying to avoid or escape. We’ll deal with those separately.

Q: What if I don’t know my long-term direction?

A: Make them up and test them. Choose enduring North Stars that align with your values—such as financial freedom, meaningful work, meaningful relationships, giving back, and great health. They will serve you well across most of your life.

Q: What should I do if an outcome fails Stage 5 (Ecology)?

A: Run through the process again as a check. If it still fails, discard it and choose a new outcome that aligns with your direction.
