Make It Yours — You Own it! V: 08

Make It Yours / Key Takeaway

Sustainable development doesn’t happen passively. Real growth requires you to move beyond borrowed techniques, take full responsibility for your practice, and pressure-test your skills alongside capable comrades who won’t let you coast.

Making NLP Your Own

No course, no coach, and no certification can make you better at what you do. Only you can do that.

A technique you learn during training isn’t yet a skill. It only becomes a genuine capability when you have tested it, adapted it, made mistakes, refined it, and eventually made it your own.

During my 30 years in business, I learned that rigid formulas are useful for getting started, but the most valuable learning comes from testing what works for you in the real world.

You don’t need a conveyor belt. You need an environment where you keep exploring, testing, and learning. That’s how sustainable development happens.

Real growth requires a combination of qualities:

  • Ambition encourages you to aim higher and take on bigger challenges.
  • Courage helps you try new approaches before you feel completely ready.
  • Discipline keeps you practising deliberately when early motivation fades.
  • Humility reminds you there is always more to learn and assumptions to test.
  • Honesty forces you to recognise what is actually working and what isn’t.

Surround yourself with capable comrades—peers and mentors who tell you the unvarnished truth. As you make these tools your own, they stop being theories you try to remember and become responses you naturally deliver. Instead of relying on a script, you begin operating with greater flexibility, composure, and awareness when it matters most.

Make It Yours: FAQs

Q: What does “make it yours” actually mean?

A: It means moving past mimicking a trainer’s words or memorising a script. You test and refine the principle until it integrates seamlessly into your natural leadership style.

Q: Should I follow NLP techniques strictly by the book?

A: Start by practising the technique as structured to understand its underlying mechanics. Once you understand why it works, adapt the language and timing to fit your real-world conversations.

Q: Who are “capable comrades”?

A: Peers, mentors, or colleagues who hold high standards, tell you the unvarnished truth, and refuse to let you coast on comfortable habits.
